The numbers

Safety facts worth citing.

These figures are intentionally narrow. Where the best available evidence is historical, the date and limitation stay with the number.

20,000

Historical annual ER injury estimate

In a 2000 public record, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported an average of 20,000 people per year treated in hospital emergency rooms for garage-door-related injuries since 1990. This is a historical estimate, not a current annual count.

46

Confirmed child deaths reported to CPSC

CPSC reported 46 confirmed deaths involving children ages 2 to 14 from garage-door entrapment between March 1982 and December 1990. That history helped drive federal protection requirements for residential openers.

How to use this page

Use the dates with the data.

The injury figure and child-entrapment record are important historical context. They should not be presented as current annual totals. The home-count and bedroom figures come from the 2023 American Housing Survey, while the safety requirements and testing guidance come from CPSC material published in 1991 and 2000.

For current injury research, CPSC’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System publishes annual datasets and a query tool. It is designed to produce nationwide estimates from a representative hospital sample.
